Preservation Maryland Elects Five New Members to Its Board of Directors

Preservation Maryland is pleased to announce the election of five new members to our Board of Directors. The new Board members represent diverse backgrounds and interests, and will help support the organization with important efforts now and into the future.

“We are thrilled to welcome a powerful group of preservation professionals to our Board of Directors,” said Katie Parks, Vice President of Preservation Maryland. “As our organization’s programming continues to grow across the state, it is vital to have these industry experts lending their time and talent as we work to preserve heritage, create lasting change, and develop new pathways to preserve our state’s history.”

About Our New Board Members

Ward Bucher, AIA, APT

Ward Bucher is a Principal/Historical Architect at Encore Sustainable Architects. He is a registered architect in Washington, D.C, Maryland, and Virginia, and with over 47 years of experience, has designed numerous new, green, and historic buildings. Some of Bucher’s greatest work can be seen in the restored McCormick-Goodhart Mansion, for which he received many awards: USGBC-MD, Altruistic Project of the Year; AIA VA Society, Historic Preservation Design Excellence Award of Honor; NH & RA, J. Timothy Anderson Award for Excellence in Historic Rehabilitation and Most Innovative Adaptive Re-Use. Bucher enjoys designing and preserving the spaces that people love.

George J. Arendt, III LEED AP

George Arendt is a Project Executive at Southway Builders. He provides leadership and management oversight for projects and develops strategies and construction plans to ensure that all activities run smoothly and safely. Some of the projects Arendt has supervised include University West Apartments for Johns Hopkins University, The Parkway Theater, and Hollins Station. Arendt has 30 years of experience in the field.

Nancy Schumm

Nancy Schumm conducts Cultural Resource Reviews for PRIME AE Group, Inc. Schumm has a wide array of experience, as she has conducted historical studies, provided historic consulting, written books and articles, given lectures, and presented papers and presentations at conferences. Schumm has also served on Professional Boards for the Ela Historical Society, Illinois State Historical Society, and Lake County Heritage Farm Foundation, among many others. Prior to working for PRIME AE, Schumm was a part of Schumm Consulting LLC for seven years.

Eric R. Ober, P.E., S.E.

Eric Ober is an Associate Principal for Simpson Gumpertz & Heger Inc. As an Associate Principal, Ober provides consulting structural engineering services for a variety of projects, prepares reports and construction documents, and carries out construction administration. With over 26 years of experience, Ober has overseen structural engineering projects in Washington, D.C., Falls Church, VA, Albany, NY, and many other states. Ober received his B.S. and M.S. in Civil Engineering from Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University in Blacksburg, VA. 

Mark R. Flemming, AIA, NCRAB, PMP

Mark Flemming is a Senior Executive at Architect of the Capital. He has over 30 years of experience in the field. As Senior Executive, Flemming is responsible for projects in support of the US Congress, Library of Congress, US Supreme Court and Federal Courts. He manages teams of Civil Service members and contract staff as they work on historic preservation and adaptive reuse enterprises. Flemming successfully led the Cannon Renewal Program in 2019 and US Capitol Stone Restoration Phase II in 2020. Flemming also has experience in the US Department of State and US Army Corps of Engineers.
