Six-to-Fix Events: Historic Cemetery Documentation Regional Workshops Announced

by | Nov 19, 2019

As part of the organization’s on-going work to protect Maryland’s historic cemeteries, Preservation Maryland will offer public cemetery documentation workshops this winter.

Working with the Maryland Department of Transportation State Highway Administration, Preservation Maryland has embarked on an ambitious project to document 100 cemeteries and burial sites across the state.

Starting in Spring 2019, Preservation Maryland began to document cemeteries and burial grounds within or adjacent to Maryland Department of Transportation (MDOT) and/or State Highway Administration (SHA) right of way that have yet to be recorded, are abandoned, or are not being maintained.

Cemetery Documentation Specialist, Caroline Herritt, will share her notes from the field and discuss what trends she has discovered after visiting over 100 Maryland cemeteries. She will also review the mobile app specially developed by SHA to record data points. These data points will be added to a data layer in their statewide GIS database and mapping tool.

Attendees will also hear from Alexander Keim from SHA about what inspired the project, next steps for this innovative program, and how you can get involved in documenting cemeteries with the new app.
