Organization  Background

Preservation Maryland is the first and foremost historic preservation organization in the state.  Founded in 1931, it has been a leader in the preservation movement of our state and nation ever since.  Our mission is the preservation of Maryland’s historic buildings, neighborhoods, landscapes and archaeological sites through outreach, funding, and advocacy.

Preservation Maryland achieves its mission through an expanding group of core programs.  We provide leadership to a large coalition of individuals and organizations at the state, county, city, and community level that advocate for the causes we support.  We organize more than a dozen events, large and small, which provide information, training, award recognition and professional development to urban and rural historic communities and their leaders.  Each year we select six at-risk historic properties or programs for focused assistance.  We lead Maryland’s Smart Growth program which advocates for state and local policy priorities that direct new public and private investment in housing, commercial development, transportation and public services which will benefit Maryland’s historic and traditional core communities.  We partner with Maryland’s leading historic preservation, environmental conservation and land preservation agencies and organizations to help achieve our Smart Growth mission. We make flexible grants to support the preservation of Maryland history and historic properties in partnership with local nonprofit organizations, community groups and churches.  We are the national partner for the advancement of craftsmanship training in the historic trades which can open pathways to successful careers for at-risk youth and returning veterans.
