The Beatty-Cramer House

The circa 1732 The Beatty-Cramer House is one of Maryland’s most unique historic homes – a stunning blend of Dutch and English architecture. Owned by the Frederick County Landmarks Foundation, the building needs a new use and purpose. Preservation Maryland will support a new vision for the site and work with the Foundation to identify a sustainable and long-term reuse plan.

The Problem

Maintained but vacant for decades, The Beatty-Cramer House needs a new purpose and sustainable use.

The Fix

Preservation Maryland will support a new vision for the site and work with the Foundation to identify a sustainable and long-term reuse plan.

HISTORY & SIGNIFICANCE

The original portion of the Beatty-Cramer House is the oldest known house in Frederick County, and is one of the earliest in the state. It is a rare survivor of early colonial vernacular building tradition, displaying a merging of Dutch, English, and early American carpentry techniques.

THREATS & GOALS

Both immediate and long-term threats endanger the Beatty-Cramer House and site. The immediate threat to the Beatty-Cramer House is on-going deterioration. Stabilization starting in 1996 countered some of the deterioration but stalled in 2002. The site is in need of a new use to ensure its long-term preservation.
