Some of the most sacred sites in Maryland are in impending danger due to environmental factors as well as the passage of time. Cemeteries face resource specific threats including lack of funding for maintenance and conservation as well as pressure to use the land for development. In some cases, questions of ownership also halt preservation.
Preservation Maryland will work closely with the Coalition to Protect Maryland Burial Sites to bring much needed attention to the thousands of cemeteries throughout the state that are in disrepair, while also providing the general public with information on how to care for neglected and abandoned cemeteries. We will also organize volunteer cleanup days at cemeteries around the state.
This October, Preservation Maryland will host professional volunteers in archaeology and preservation for a full-court press workday at the historic Mt. Hope Baptist Church in Charles County in partnership with the Coalition to Protect Maryland Burial Sites.
Preservation Maryland is proud to partner with the Coalition to Protect Maryland Burial Sites to commence their statewide conference and annual meeting on the topic of Maryland’s historic cemeteries including sessions from the National Park Service and a focus on providing on-the-spot assistance and advice to attendees about preserving cemeteries in your communities.
The Coalition to Protect Maryland Burial Sites annual conference brought over 60 attendees to Anne Arundel County to hear about current events, like the response to the vandalized Mount Carmel in Philadelphia and the latest in conservation technologies. The sessions were recorded by Preservation Maryland and are available on YouTube.
