Endangered Maryland

Preservation Maryland and Maryland Life magazine Announce "Endangered Maryland"
Statewide List of Threatened Historic Properties

"Endangered Maryland," the first statewide list of threatened historic properties in Maryland, is released today in the March-April edition of Maryland Life. A statewide panel created the list by evaluating nominated properties, and assessing the level of threat, historic and architectural significance, community commitment, and potential solutions.  The program's purpose is to generate public awareness of Maryland's significant threatened properties, possible solutions and call for action.

"Historic buildings define the unique history and character of Maryland and its communities," noted Tyler Gearhart, Executive Director of Preservation Maryland.  "Endangered Maryland provides powerful means to raise awareness about threats to extraordinary resources throughout the state.  This program has long been a dream of ours and our partnership with Maryland Life has made it a reality."

Endangered Maryland is modeled after the nationwide list created each year by the National Trust for Historic Preservation as well as other successful statewide endangered lists around the country.  Statewide lists have proven to be highly effective tools for historic preservation.

"Preservation Maryland has a long record of building coalitions to from the ground up," stated Dan Patrell, Publisher and Editor of Maryland Life. "We felt it was the perfect partnership in this effort to showcase what makes Maryland unique and to prevent the loss of these important sites. When we saw the list the panel had selected, we knew this program would help stir people to help save these sites."

Tobacco Barns

2008 Tobacco Barns Restoration Fund Guidelines

January 2008 - In 2006, Preservation Maryland developed the Tobacco Barn Restoration Fund in partnership with the National Trust for Historic Preservation, the Maryland Historical Trust, the Southern Maryland Heritage Area, and the governments of Anne Arundel, Prince George, Charles, Calvert, and St. Mary's Counties.  This effort has been supported by grants from the Maryland Historical Trust and from the Save America's Treasures program, secured by Rep. Steny Hoyer.  Thus far we've saved more than a dozen tobacco barns across the region and we're looking for another round of applicants in 2008.  Please contact Joshua Phillips at jphillips@preservationmaryland.org for more information.
