With one of the best acronyms around, Docomomo stands for the International Committee for Documentation and Conservation of the Modern Movement! The organization was founded in 1988 in the Netherlands and currently has 69 chapters in countries around the world.

Each year, the Docomomo US hosts a national Tour Day to encourage modern architecture enthusiasts and experts to share their knowledge and passion. This year Tour Day will be held on Saturday, October 7, 2017 with several events in Maryland and Washington, DC over the course of that weekend.

Bolton Square, Baltimore

Bolton Square, the award-winning Baltimore townhouse development designed by Hugh Newell Jacobson and built in 1967, is celebrating its 50th anniversary on Saturday, October 7, 2017. The Bolton Square Homeowners Association has planned an afternoon of festivities including a self-guided walking tour of private homes and gardens ending with a brief program and reception in the Common that evening.

Montgomery County

The Montgomery Modern program will lead a bus tour on Sunday, October 8, 2017 of the work of Cohen, Haft & Associates, a leading modernist architecture firm distinguished for contemporary designs integrated with natural often rugged settings. The tour includes The Hilltop and Potowmack Preserve, the Charles E. Smith Service Center campus, which includes the Bender JCC of Greater Washington, Jewish Social Services Agency and Hebrew Home for the Aged.

Washington, DC

Docomomo DC is hosting a unique walking and Metro tour on Saturday, October 7, 2017, featuring the District’s brutalist architecture – an architectural style everyone loves to hate, but marks an important period in the history of design and recent demolitions have shown that now is the time to reevaluate and celebrate this architecture. The tour will start with a lecture by Michael Kubo, co-author of Heroic: Concrete Architecture and the New Boston at the AIA Headquarters.
