2011 Preservation Awards
Each year Preservation Maryland offers the highest recognition of individuals, groups and organizations active in the preservation, restoration and/or rehabilitation of the state's historic and cultural resources.
Preservation Maryland presented its annual Historic Preservation Awards on Tuesday, November 9 at the Maryland Club in Baltimore to honor this year's Preservation Maryland award recipients. The Volunteer Award was given to J. O. K. Walsh of Denton who for more than 30 years has led preservation efforts on the Eastern Shore, facilitating the preservation of 49 historic buildings in Caroline County. The Society for the Preservation of Federal Hill and Fell's Point, for 45 years the voice for protecting two of Baltimore's City's most threatened and most historic neighborhoods, received the Stewardship Award.
The Phoenix Award for a preservation project, went to the Frederick Visitor Center, an adaptive use of a 110-year old warehouse in downtown Frederick completed in March 2011. This year's President's Award was given to The Azola Companies, restoration consultants and contractors in the Baltimore area for more than 35 years. Their projects include Bosley Hall, the former Baltimore County jail; the Maryland Building at the Maryland Zoo in Baltimore and the Railway Express Building in Baltimore. The awards program was preceded by a reception and James Lighthizer, president of the Civil War Trust, offered remarks and board members were elected.
